A Vet’s View – Energy Balance After Calving

A long-standing dairy client of mine runs a tidy, well-organised operation. Calving always went to plan, body condition was where it should be, and transition nutrition had been carefully managed. Despite that, early lactation output and reproductive performance weren’t quite stacking up. Nothing obvious stood out, but overall results were falling short of expectations.

Subclinical ketosis (SCK) was high on my list. It’s easy to miss in herds that appear well managed, yet it can quietly impact both production and fertility. Given how frequently it shows up across New Zealand systems, I suggested taking a preventative approach, including incorporating Rumenox®.

Using Rumenox® through the dosatron from calving through to mating was a shift in approach for this farm. However, the supporting science around improved rumen function and more efficient energy utilisation made it a logical step.

Over time, the response was encouraging. Cows held condition more consistently, and the 6-week in-calf rate lifted. While multiple factors always play a role, Rumenox® has since become a consistent part of their programme.

It’s a good reminder that early lactation is a critical window. Even in herds that are performing well on the surface, targeted support can make a meaningful difference and help avoid the subtle losses that often slip under the radar.
